Lana Del Rey- A Poet
Many people know the singer, Lana Del Rey. But I know it's not often that someone views her in the same way I do. I have been a hardcore Lana Del Rey stan for a while now, as she is one of the only artists I consistently bless my ears with. When I listen to her songs, I not only see them as songs, but poetry. Each song tells a story, sometimes connecting to each other. While her writing by itself tells a story, her singing adds more meaning. Lana's emphasis on certain words or phrases while she's singing uncovers what she originally wrote the story to mean. In her song Salvatore speficically, if you were to read it as it is written, it would lead you to believe this is a past memory that she is almost longing to experience again. But with Lana's performance, it seems more like she's daring this man, and playing with him. It feels like she's explicitly sayings she doesn't care for him, but like taunting him.
On the flip side, quite a few of Lana Del Rey's songs very explicitly give a message or tell a story. These stories are often past (sometimes present) romances that she feels the need to write about. Many songs including; West Coast, Born to Die, How to disappear, and more are written by telling an extremely specific situation, word by word, movement by movement. She will also explain the situation and what it means to her in the same song. Although finding out what the situations means to Lana can be harder in most situations, because that is the part she is almost always very inexplicit about. This aspect adds to her writing style, most likely on purpose. Leaving details out and letting the reader or listener fill in gaps is something Lana does often in her songs, adding to a more mysterious impression.
One of the foremost reasons I love Lana Del Rey is the way she presents her vocal abilities. The manner she sings in gives warmth, no matter the deep meaning of the lyrics, which set in later. Her angelic lyrics versus her normally sad or demoralizing writing gives for a perplexing contrast.
All things considered, Lana knows how to write lyrics that dig deep, and allow people to relate and feel with her. Many people who their only job is to write, can't reach this level of originality and aesthetic until they have been in the field for twenty years. Whereas Lana Del Rey used her writing talent and vocals to reach ultimate popularity by the time she turned 26, six years after she released her first song. After reaching this popularity, this admiration by millions has continued for over ten years.
My rating: Every Lana Del Rey Song is a 10/10.
