Review of Sisters by Raina Telgemeier

Growing up, I loved reading graphic novels. I especially loved Raina Telgemeier’s collection of autobiographical graphic novels. But most of all I loved her book Sisters. Sisters is a sequel to Telgemeier’s first book Smile. In it, she shares her experiences growing up and more specifically her relationship with her sister.

The book follows Raina as she goes on a roadtrip with her sister Amara. It also shows flashbacks to pivotal moments in her childhood that included her sister. It displayed her and her sister’s bonds by showing their fights, rivalries and surprising heartfelt moments.

When I was younger I thought immediately that the characters were exact mirrors to me and my sister. Raina looked exactly like my older sister and I looked similar enough to the younger sister Amara. Now I see this mirror as not only how we look but how we act too. Me and my sister have the exact same dynamic as the pair have in the book. From personalities to mannerisms, me and my sister are exact copies of the pair in Sisters.

In Sisters Raina is 14, and seems at all times to be against Amara. The book shows the majority of their relationship as being constantly at one another's throats. This is very similar to how me and my sister were when she was closer to the age 14. However, by the end of the book Amara and Raina had been given a chance to see eye to eye and seemed to then act closer and better bonded than they had throughout the rest of the book. Which once again is very similar to how, as we got older, me and my sister seemed to grow closer together.

Overall, I think the novel Sisters is a great representation of what having a sister is like. Sisters is in general a wonderfully written, beautifully drawn graphic novel. This book is a great book for any people of all ages. It is extremely relatable and surprisingly emotional. I’m glad I took the chance to re-read it now that I’ve gotten older.

  2. Miranda, I can definitely agree with you on this review. Sisters was also a very relatable book for me in how I felt that I really identified with the book due to the dynamic I had with my own sister. Sisters was a favorite book of mine when I was younger, much like many of Raina Telgemeier's other works.
