1984, One of the Worst Book I Have Ever Read (By: Lucas Braun)

Image
Last year as a subbie we were assigned an assignment in English class to read and then write an essay about a banned book. Other students were choosing books that were published more recently like The Hate You Give, but I chose to read 1984. I regret this decision greatly as I look back at it now, but there is nothing I could have done after I started reading the book.      1984 by George Orwell was published in 1949. This book was Orwell's guess as to what the year 1984 might be like in the Soviet Union. The main character, Winston Smith works for the government in the Ministry of Truth. His job there is to write newspapers about how the supreme leader (Big Brother) is doing great things. Although he works with the government, he secretly hates the government and wants to work together with a secret group called the Brotherhood to overthrow the government. During this time Winston decides to get a diary and writes about overthrowing...

3 Cameras from: A History of Photography in 50 Cameras

Image
Lately I have been really into photography and have been reading books with tips on taking photos. When looking for more books on photography, I stumbled upon A History of Photography in 50 Cameras. This book goes through the evolution of 50 different cameras ranging from 1839 – 2013. It has images of photos taken by each camera as well as detailed sketches/blueprint of the camera. So, to get a feel of the book, here are 3 cameras that I found interesting. Reading this book, I found it fascinating that these camera inventors really loved making disguised cameras. A camera disguised as a revolver, a pocket watch, and a matchbox were all mentioned in this book, but I found the Scovill Book Camera the most interesting out of these secret cameras. Three leather covered books with a strap attached to it, was made in 1892 in the United States, by Scovill and Adams. Andrew D. Dobbs, the inventor of this camera, was really focused on making the camera into a realistic book, with title...

Secret of the Commonwealth.

Image
The Secret Commonwealth is the second book in the Book of Dust series and starts off with Lyra (the kid that Malcolm and Alice had saved in the previous book) being an adult. From the beginning, the book starts off somewhat slow, just like the first one. The author takes his time easing us into Lyra's world, starting off with Lyra's daemon Pantamailon asking to leave the college dorm so he can go and take a walk outside. There's a visible tension between the two which is very strange as a Human and their Daemon are usually best friends, however, greater worries are about to come for the two.      In this book series, Humans and Daemons never separate, unless one of them dies, however, Lyra and Pantamailon are special and are able to do so. After separating from Lyra and going on a run through the countryside, Pantamailon hears a noise and begins hiding. While in the trees looking down, he witnesses a murder. Two men jump a man and his daemon, however,...

Etiquette and Espionage Book Review

Image
Ediquette and Espionage  by Gail Carriger is a book about a girl Sophronia, being forced by her mother to go to finishing school due to her atrocious manners. The fourteen year old girl gets into and out of, dangerous situations from the start of the book. She's also practically recruited by the headmistress of Mademoiselle Geraldine's finishing school, after Sophronia's "unladylike" skills are mentioned in conversation from her mother. She could be characterized as a tomboy.  I really reading this book, as it was very amusing and carefully worded to make you want to keep reading. Although I will say there were many words I had to search up because they were British slang, but knowing what they meant made the book much funnier. There were often cheeky remarks made by Sophronia which made me like her character even more. I also enjoyed the supernatural part of the book with vampires, werewolves, and a Hogwarts- esque school.  The book itself is set in a steampunk k...

Ranking The 5 Major Characters in the Perks of Being a Wallflower Based on My Own Opinions

Image
The Perks Of Being a Wallflower, written by Stephan Chbosky, is an intense novel focusing on the inner workings of a grieving teenage boy’s mind. The book follows a boy under the false name of ‘Charlie’ as he faces his first year of high school after losing his best friend to suicide a few months prior. It tells the story through letters that he sends to an unknown recipient. The novel represents grief, depression, and friendship. Charlie befriends multiple seniors that teach him and help him in ways he never could have expected. Even though Charlie is mentally unwell, his newfound friends make his life a little easier. These are my rankings of the most important five characters in the novel. (as in Charlie, Patrick, Sam, Bill, and Mary Elizabeth as they are the most valuable to the plot) [Pictures from movie although I am ranking them as to how they were portrayed in the novel] Patrick Patrick was Charlie’s first friend once Charlie made it to highschool. Patrick is a class ...
